BEING A DOCTOR MASTERMIND

SYLLABUS

A VOYAGE

The course content provides structure to guide our exploration and help you discover your unique formulation for realizing the nearly boundless potential of this profession. The source of that potential is the multiplicity of levels on which Medicine touches us, something we know intuitively but often not explicitly. Clarity about our own experiences of these levels unlocks information about our particular quest and prepares us to work more deliberately with our strengths, predilections, and vulnerabilities as physicians. Ultimately, that insight can tell us where to channel our energies and what agreements to make. Building (or rebuilding) a powerful foundation for the role and work of doctoring requires willingness to take an unflinching look at difficulties and disappointments, both within and outside oneself. A hallmark of transformative process is breaking down old structures that are no longer useful so that something new can emerge. that the old way would not have even perceived.

A MAP

Whether you are transitioning to practice from training, at an impasse years into practice, or glimpsing your end game, elements of the transformative process are the same. It can be thrilling and terrifying as all high stakes ventures are. You might find, as I have at times, that daring to ask and trusting ourselves enough to answer “How could this be better?” can feel like walking a gangplank. You might fear iron gates are slamming shut behind you.  Lots of other questions and matters arise once the lid is taken off. This program is made of those things I found after taking the lid off, now organized and articulated to serve as a rough guide. I encountered this journey as uncharted territory, and I've made a boatload of mistakes, missed turns, started up one chasm and had to turn back to find a different passage. I couldn't find good guides, and I got lots of bad advice. I felt terribly alone and often doubted myself and hesitated.

ACCOMPANIMENT

I created this program to help get you on your path and provide some provocations, reinforcements, nourishing thoughts, and companionship. It supplements and focuses the conversational aspect of the mastermind. Together, they comprise critical accompaniment for a vital and tricky endeavor, qualities that are present in almost every worthy project. I want you to have the best, most interesting, most vivifying life you can imagine, for you and for all the people whose lives will be enriched by encountering you as a person has taken on what you have, as someone who braved the journey. Thar be dragons out there . . . and some of them will end up being the greatest teachers if you let them.
